COURSE DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to the major works of art and architecture of the ancient and Medieval periods within their historical and cultural contexts.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. A student should gain a general working knowledge of the major monuments of art history from the Stone Age to the Medieval.
  2. A working knowledge includes an ability to describe works of art accurately, to place a work within its historical context, and to attempt to explain its function or meaning.
  3. A student should also learn to understand the role of past cultures in the present and issues related to visual culture in general.
